Find a Great Roommate
The Washington Post
"When strangers move in together, they will always make assumptions that
other people are like them and then find out later on that people are very
different," says Lori Stephens, author of "House Mates: A Guide to
Cooperative Shared Housing"

Despite the obstacles, Stephens says having a roommate can be a
valuable experience, because it teaches important life skills for all kinds of
future relationships. "This is a practicing ground," she says. "You're
starting to establish your life patterns." She says awareness, sensitivity,
flexibility, honesty and boundaries are some of the traits people can learn
from living with roommates. But perhaps the one thing that can help
people be compatible is one's perception of the issues. "Most importantly,
have a great sense of humor," she says. "It can get you through all kinds
of very rough situations."
